History of the Rock Island Housing Authority

The Rock Island Housing Authority was founded in 1937 as a result of the Great Depression. At that time, there were rampant unemployment and decay in the stock market. The Housing Authority was created as a means to provide affordable housing for those who needed it most.

As of today, the Housing Authority is one of the largest public housing authorities in the country. They oversee over 2,000 apartments and provide shelter for over 10,000 people each year. Their mission is to provide decent and affordable housing for those who need it most; through developing programs and partnerships with community organizations.

Affordable Housing

The Rock Island Housing Authority (RIHA) is a public housing authority located in Rock Island, Illinois. It manages a total of 1,064 units of affordable housing, consisting of 994 public housing units and 54 Section 8 vouchers. The RIHA also operates the Edward J. Burns complex, which is made up of 164 apartments for low-income seniors.[1]
The RIHA has been in operation since 1949. It was founded as a result of the passage of the Housing Act of 1949, which sought to provide affordable housing for workers in the burgeoning city of Rock Island. At its inception, the RIHA occupied only a small part of the current site on which it resides. In subsequent years, the authority has increased its holdings by purchasing and demolishing other buildings in the area. Today, it occupies over 2 million square feet (200 hectares) across 17 properties.[2]
Despite its large footprint, the RIHA maintains an intimate community feel due to its placement near local businesses and recreational facilities. Its residents are able to avail themselves of numerous services and amenities available through the authority, including job training programs and financial assistance for accessing health care and groceries.[3]
