In a tweet Friday afternoon, the crew shared pictures of the patch, a blue maple leaf studying “Börje” with a yellow crown on high.
The colors are a tribute to Sweden — the place Salming was from. The crown is a nod to Salming’s longtime nickname “The King.”
In a press release Thursday, Toronto Maple Leafs president and alternate governor Brendan Shanahan stated Salming was a “pioneer of the sport and an icon with an unbreakable spirit and unquestioned toughness.”

Salming signed with the Leafs as a free agent forward of the 1973-74 season and spent 16 seasons with the crew.
