Who Founded Gucci?

Gucci is one of the world’s most renowned brands in leather goods, fashion, watches and jewellery. Its dynamism, creativity, artistic aesthetic and detailing have made it a brand of choice for designers and patrons alike.

The company began in Florence, Italy and has a history that stretches back over 60 years. The first runway show took place in Florence where it all started and many of the products have been redesigned, improved and reinvented throughout the years.

Guccio Gucci

Despite a history of public family squabbles, who founded gucci has forged an incredible brand and merged elegance and style from abroad with the craftsmanship that is native to Italy. His talent, intuition and craftsmanship have made his brand one of the most popular in the world.

In 1881, Guccio was born to Tuscan parents Gabriello and Elena Santini. His early years were spent in Florence.

His father was a poor leather craftsman from San Miniato. When he was 17, Guccio travelled to London to work as a lift boy at the prestigious Savoy Hotel.

He was enamored with the luggage carried by guests of the hotel and it inspired him to create his first collection.

After returning to Italy, he established the first Gucci store on Via della Vigna Nuova in Florence. Using the best artisans, he started selling leather suitcases and bags that had classic styles and high-quality materials from the Tuscany region.

Aldo Gucci

Aldo Gucci started working at his father’s company when he was 15 years old. He got a taste of the family business through small tasks, like sweeping up after the artisan workers left the workshop.

As the fashion house grew, Aldo saw an opportunity to expand beyond saddlery into luxury leather goods. He created a pigskin bag that became the brand’s signature and launched a bamboo-handled travel bag in 1951.

Despite his workaholic ways, Aldo had an enduring love affair with one of his employees, Bruna d’Amico. Their relationship became more serious when Bruna gave birth to a baby girl in 1963.

In the early 80s, Aldo and his sons’ share of the company was sold to a holding company. After that, Maurizio took control of the brand and began a long string of drama. Eventually, Bergdorf Goodman’s President Dawn Mello, and her head of Accessories Richard Lambertson, came on board to help the company turn things around.

Vasco Gucci

Gucci was born in Florence, Italy, and moved to London where he found work at the upscale Savoy Hotel as a bellboy. It was there that he began noticing how the rich carried their luggage around, which inspired him to create his first brand of leather goods.

He opened a shop in one of the city’s fanciest shopping districts, where he stocked an array of items made both in Italy and abroad. These goods eventually grew into the eponymous label that Gucci is known for today.

After the death of his father in 1953, Gucci’s youngest son, Maurizio, took over the company. His two brothers, Aldo and Rodolfo, were later involved in the company.

Rodolfo Gucci

When Guccio died in 1953, his four sons took over the business. Rodolfo managed the company in Milan, Vasco supervised operations in Florence and Aldo moved to New York to run the brand’s overseas branch.

After World War II, Gucci began to develop alternative materials, using pigskin, which was introduced by Aldo. He also re-introduced the use of bamboo, which became a signature house material.

As a result, Gucci became a favourite among the rich and famous, including Grace Kelly, who regularly wore Gucci bags. The label’s first signature print, a series of small interconnecting diamonds set on woven hemp from Naples, was launched during this period.

Despite the family tensions that emerged during this time, Gucci continued to thrive. In fact, the brand’s iconic green red-green web stripe, which was inspired by the girth of a horse, remains a major design element today.

Maurizio Gucci

Maurizio Gucci (26 September 1948 – 27 March 1995) was the son of actor Rodolfo Gucci and grandson of founder Guccio Gucci. He served as the one-time head of the Gucci fashion house until his death.

The Gucci brand was founded by Maurizio’s grandfather, who was inspired by his work as a bellboy at the Savoy hotel in London and crafted bags made from the leather he used to carry his luggage. The company became known for its leather and fur-lined shoes, handbags, and luggage.

After he inherited his father’s share, Maurizio began to argue with his cousins over business matters and fought for years. He eventually sold his remaining shares to Investcorp for $170 million in 1993, ending the family’s association with the brand.
